How Peanut Island Got Its Name

Peanut Island is one of the many treasures of the Palm Beach County outdoors. This small island near the mouth of Palm Beach Inlet is known as a Florida wonderland of boats at the sandbar, snorkeling, camping, and kayaking. Most people assume that Peanut Island got its name because of its size or even shape, but its name is actually rooted in its history.

Peanut Island was created in 1918 with material dredged while digging out Palm Beach Inlet for safe passage. It was actually originally called “Inlet Island”, and became known as Peanut Island years later when a plan was made to use it as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. In 1946, the plan was abandoned, but the name “Peanut Island” stuck for good.
