Attention all Palm Beach County scoundrels, buccaneers, and scallywags! Uncork your inner Jack Sparrow, hoist the sails upon the Black Pearl, and set sail for National Rum Day on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Yo-ho-ho-ho a pirate’s life for me! Grab a swashbuckling sip of rum on National Rum Day at one of the Palm Beach ports of call. Like other spirits, rum has medicinal origins, and it was frequently used for its curative properties–not just by pirates, but by everyone who made a living sailing the high seas.

Water on long sea voyages does not stay potable for long. Access to rainwater could not be counted on during long sea voyages. The solution? Grog. Part medicinal, part cocktail, grog was a mix of water, rum, and lime juice thought to prevent dehydration while also preserving the fresh water supply. Pirates drank it by the barrel.
