A recent study suggests that one of the favorite holiday drinks and favorite to drink during the cooler temperatures can do more than just warm you up. Hot chocolate has been found to boost brain power.

The recent study combined efforts between the University of Birmingham in the UK and the University of Illinois. The first part of the study was conducted on young males between the ages of 18 and 40 years old. The study is one of the first to be done that demonstrates the benefits of drinking hot cocoa.

The study participants underwent a non-invasive brain imaging to measure blood oxygen levels in the brain. Researchers pointed out that participants who consumed the flavanol-rich drink, often found in hot chocolate, produced a faster and greater increase in blood oxygen levels.

Flavanols, a sub-group of plant flavanols, are present in cocoa, grapes, apples, tea, berries, and other foods. Flavanols are known to have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health and cognitive health. Researchers found during the study that participants that drank hot chocolate achieved elevated levels one minute faster than those who did not drink hot chocolate and performed tasks 11 percent faster on average than those who did not drink hot chocolate.

Even though the flavanol enriched warm beverage can help boost brain power, researchers noted not to overindulge in the favorite holiday drink this holiday season. Researchers state that it is important to maintain a well-balanced diet to benefit your health.
