Obon Weekend will occur at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens on Saturday, August 13, 2022, and Sunday, August 14, 2022. The Morikami is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach. The Japanese Gardens will host Obon Weekend. It is an annual event that honors the spirits of one's ancestors. Guests and members are invited to take a tranquil stroll through the Japanese gardens, fill out tanzaku slips in memory of lost loved ones, and pay their respects to founder George Morikami at the Bon altar. Fushu Daiko will also perform their legendary taiko drumming in the spirit of Obon.

The Buddhist event generally takes place from August 13th through 16th. During this period, many people pay a visit to their family graves to honor the spirits of their ancestors and loved ones. Families will come together, visit the graves of their ancestors, and make food offerings at altars and temples. You will also see fires at the entrances of houses to guide the ancestral spirit’s home.

Obon Weekend is also recognized as one of Japan’s three biggest holidays along with Golden Week in May and New Year’s in January.

Details:

Time:  10am-5pm

Cost:  Free with paid admission.

Taiko performances are $7 for members and $10 for non-members.
