If you are an environmentalist, conservationist, or reptile creature fan, take a hike on the Deering Estate. The Deering Estate in partnership with the Deering Estate Foundation is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural ecosystems, native plants, and wildlife through wise stewardship and best conservation management practices. The Deering Estate is in Miami-Dade County 16701 S.W. 72nd Avenue in Miami. It is just about an hour south of Palm Beach County.

The Deering Estate has the greatest quality and truly distinct natural resources in Miami-Dade County. The Estate is one of the few remaining “Environmentally Endangered Lands.”  Amongst the eight South Florida ecosystems, the Deering Estate Foundation are custodians of 120 acres of pine rock lands. Rock Lands is a globally endangered habitat and one of the richest sources of the earth’s biodiversity.

The upland areas of South Florida are associated with ledges of limestone. Pinelands and tropical hardwood hammocks cover virtually all the outcrops and the rock land ecosystem. The area covered by rock land ecosystems is somewhat modest and shrinking because of urban development. Deering Estate also is home to seldom noticed species of butterflies. Guests will explore various habitats in search of the Ruddy Daggerwing, Dina Yellow, and Atala as well as the nearly forty species of butterflies that are onsite. Join on a guided tour through favorite locations on the Deering Estate.

Butterfly Walks are held seasonally on the 4th Saturday of the month. The next Butterfly Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2022, for one hour between 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Butterfly Walks season is from June – September.

Cost:  $15 per adult (ages 15+), $7 per youth (ages 4-14). Free for Deering Estate Foundation. To purchase tickets, click here.
