The Cumberland Building Society has announced that Stuart Miller will take on the role as chief executive, subject to regulatory approval.

Miller joins from Newcastle Building Society and brings over 38 years of experience in financial services.

He will succeed Des Moore in 2026, following eight years of leadership and transformation at the society.

Miller, who most recently served as chief commercial officer, says he will carry a ‘people first’ ethos into the new era.

Commenting on his new role, Miller says: “The high street matters, because it’s where communities connect. When a branch closes in a rural area it’s not just a financial service that disappears, it’s part of the social fabric.”

“I’m honoured to step into this role and am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Des during this transition. His leadership has shaped The Cumberland’s success, and I look forward to building on that strong foundation as we move forward together.”

“The Cumberland will continue to evolve, embrace new technologies, and adapt to modern challenges. But at its core, the commitment remains unchanged, human relationships, community trust, and care for members will always be the heartbeat of what we do.”

“We need to provide those human interactions to offer tailored guidance and to put a face to a name.”
