Over half – 59% – of people asked would support doubling the rate of council tax paid on second homes, a new YouGov poll shows.
Specifically, 32% of those asked said they would ‘strongly’ support this measure and 27% that they would ‘somewhat’ suppose it.
Meanwhile, 14% said they would ‘somewhat’ oppose this and 13% ‘strongly’ oppose – the remainder of survey participants saying they did not know either way.
Significantly more men than women said they strongly support the idea – 39% against 26% and the older age brackets also saw more support for such a measure – 36% of those 65 years or older saying they strongly supported the idea versus 27% of those aged 18 to 24.
In every other breakdown of the results – by political party and region, for example – the results were largely similar throughout.
YouGov quizzed 4,905 UK adults in total.
