For nearly 8 winding miles along a sandy road is the Historic Jungle Trail. The road meanders through the hammock habitat of Vero Beach's barrier island in Martin County. The trail is actually a hard-sandy road, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a perfect destination for a family fun bike ride or walks.
The historically significant trail was built in the 1920’s so that South Florida citrus growers could haul their produce up and down the barrier island. The pathway ranges from Wabasso to the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Historic Jungle Trail is one of the best places in the area to see the barrier island plant life and wildlife. It is located very close to the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Pelican Island NWR has been placed on the List of Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance along with other areas of wetlands in the U.S. If you glance up into the bright, blue sky you might spot a unique and rare white pelican or osprey. As you walk or ride by the ocean, keep an eye out on the glistening water, you may catch a glimpse of a pod of dolphins swimming by.

To reach the northern access point and parking: From the intersection of Wabasso Road (CR 510) and SR A1A, drive north 3.7 miles on A1A; you will see a sign on the right indicating Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge; turn left onto the road marked Historic Jungle Trail.
