The world premiere of Art of the Hollywood Backdrop features original, full-sized matte painting backdrops used in Hollywood's Golden Age in films like "The Sound of Music,” “Singing in the Rain,” and "North by Northwest," and "Ben-Hur." This exhibition of scenic backdrops, made for the movies between 1938 and 1968, is a celebration of a popular art form that had almost been forgotten; and it is now time to acknowledge the authorship of the painting of Mount Rushmore, Ben-Hur’s Rome, the Von Trapp Family’s Austrian Alps, and Gene Kelly’s Paris street scene. The exhibition runs from April 20, 2022, through January 22, 2023, at the Boca Museum of Art located at 501 Plaza Real in Boca Raton.

The major studios used the massive backdrops as special effect secrets. These enormous effects will move viewers into cinematic history and uncover the magnificent technical painting and drawing genius of artists creating specifically for the movie camera’s eye.

The exhibit features twenty-two scenic backdrops dating back to 1938. The showcase honors the unrecognized, talented expert artists who created these monumental canvases for Hollywood films.
