Jake Shimabukuro at the Maui Arts and Culture Center

With special guest PURE HEART, Saturday, January 21st, 2023, at 7:30 PM at the Castle Theater.

"Over the past two decades, Jake Shimabukuro has proved that there isn't a style of music that he can't play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what's remarkable about Jake's transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary – whether it's jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, or even classical – on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the 'ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the 'ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process, he's reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore underappreciated four-string instrument, causing many to call him "the Jimi Hendrix of the 'ukulele."

"Pure Heart is a contemporary Hawaiian trio that Jake started with two friends in 1994. The group includes Jon Yamasato (guitar/vocals) and Lopaka Colon (percussion). They etched out a unique sound of Hawaiian/pop/latin/jazz which has kept audiences' attention for almost 30 years."

Food and beverages will be available in the Yokouchi Pavilion for purchase from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. See the full menu HERE.

Buy tickets online at mauiarts.org. Tickets: $15, $25, $45, $65, $85 (plus applicable fees) and MACC members receive a 10% discount, and keiki 12 & under are half-price (except for the $15 seats for both).

Albatross at the ProArts Playhouse

Presented by ProArts and Oh Boy Productions is Albatross!

"An encore performance of the 2019 production awarded by the Maui News as the "Best Play" and "Best Actor" of that year, calling Frank Kane's work "the performance of the decade." Written by Maui's own Matthew Spangler, whose The Kite Runner recently ran on Broadway."

"This fast-paced adventure story explores the themes of regret, isolation, and the interconnected relationship between humans and the natural world we inhabit. It takes its inspiration from Coleridge's Mariner, an 18th-century sailor who is cursed with immortality and is thrust into the modern world. Written and performed as a rollicking sea yarn, Albatross delivers a profound and relevant message about mindfulness and the effect of our thoughtless actions on all living things. The audience sets sail in a spare but visually thrilling stagecraft powered by the latest multimedia technology. Immersed in this sensory otherworld, audiences discover who the Mariner is, why he must forever tell his story, and what he is searching for as he roams the earth," (littleboxoffice.com)
