Three ways to volunteer and enjoy beautiful Wisconsin

We have a long history of land preservation and environmental stewardship here in Dane County and across Wisconsin. Our protected spaces enrich our quality of life every day — and they're a big part of why so many of us love calling this area home.

Volunteering outside is a wonderful way to carry on that tradition. It's also a chance to connect with the natural world, learn something new, and meet fellow nature lovers along the way. Here are three ways to get involved.

1) Become a "friend" of a city, county or Wisconsin state park

Friends groups steward the land by participating in conservation projects, maintaining trails and habitats, controlling invasives, assisting with research, coordinating fundraisers and educational events, among a variety of other projects. Chances are, there's a park you already love — like Pheasant Branch — that could use your help.

2) Volunteer with Groundswell Conservancy

Groundswell Conservancy is a local conservation group dedicated to protecting special spaces here in Dane County, forever. They offer regular volunteer opportunities at beautiful spots like Westport Prairie and Patrick Marsh — great places to get your hands dirty and see some of our area's natural beauty up close.

3) Volunteer with The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is a national organization with strong Wisconsin roots. There are a number of ways you can get involved — from tracking bird and butterfly migrations, to identifying and reporting invasive species in local parks, to contributing to citizen science projects.

Whether you have a few hours or a few weekends, there's a place for you in this work. If you're looking for more ways to connect with the outdoors and the community here in the Madison area, reach out to us — we're always happy to share our favorite local spots.
