The most affordable UK cities for renters have been revealed as part of a new study by comparethemarket.

The data has been compiled to give young adults an idea of the best cities to live in based on job prospects, night life, and average rents.

By ranking the UK’s 40 most populated cities, Kingston-upon-Hull came out as the most affordable for renters, based on average rental costs of a one-bed city centre apartment, at £452.50 per month.

This was followed by Middlesborough (£475), Peterborough (£536.67), Bradford (£537.50) and Stoke-on-Trent (£550).

At the other end of the top 10 is Swindon, where renters can expect to pay £725 per month for the average one-bed city centre flat.

Overall, it was Nottingham that came out on top as the best city for young adults when based on a number of factors as well as rent, including job opportunities, cost of public transport, average meal prices and the number of bars and restaurants.

This was followed by Southampton, Coventry and Newcastle upon Tyne. Peterborough was in twentieth place.

New data from the Office for National Statistics today showed UK private rents lifted by 4.9% in the year to March, edging up from a 4.8% rise the month before.
