Birmingham is property selling hotspot of the year | Mortgage Strategy

The city where most property sales have taken place since the start of the year is Birmingham, followed by Leeds and Glasgow, new research has found.

Estate agent comparison website GetAgent.co.uk analysed property market data from the Land Registry looking at sales transactions.

The research showed there have been 3,863 sales in Birmingham so far in 2020 with an average house price of £189,899.

Leeds is close behind with transactions totalling 3,721 and an average house price of £197,026, while sales in Glasgow stood at 3,139 with the average home costing £142,690.

Cornwall, Edinburgh, Durham, Sheffield, Wiltshire, Bradford and Cheshire East also make the top 10 for the most homes sold so far this year.

The Land Registry data shows there have been 289,294 property transactions so far in 2020 at an average price of £242,041.

At a regional level, the South East has had 42,685 transactions accounting for 15 per cent of the total sales and an average house price of £332,147.

This was followed by the North West with 34,315 sales at an average cost of £173,617.

GetAgent founder and chief executive officer Colby Short comments: “Homebuyers have hit the market hard over the last few months and this is starting to show where overall transactions are concerned.

“Birmingham tops the table with the most market activity of all UK locations so far this year, with other more affordable major cities also ranking as some of the busiest with regard to home sales.

“While the hope of a stamp duty saving remains, we should see buyer demand and transaction levels remain robust as we approach the end of the year.”
