Almost a third of Britons say that owning a second home, including a holiday home, is not ‘morally acceptable.’

In the survey of 1,960 adults carried out by YouGov, however, over half – 52% – replied that it was morally acceptable, while 19% said they didn’t know.

Outlooks were more or less equal when broken down by region, gender, social grade and even politics (defined by political party choice and remain and leave voters), but there were differences where age was concerned.

By the far the cohort most likely to say that owning a second home is not morally acceptable were those aged 65 and over, of which 38% replied in this manner.

And those most likely to say that it is morally acceptable were the second-youngest group – 56% of those aged 25 to 49, followed by the youngest group, the 18 to 24 years old bracket, of whom 55% said it is morally acceptable.

Just today, Octane Capital released data showing that in some areas of England, active holiday lets have jumped by over 33% over the year.
