Ways to save on a long weekend

The endless busyness that comes with work means personal time can be pushed to the backburner. So it comes as no surprise that a long weekend is one of the most coveted events on the annual calendar. It’s no two-week cruise, but that little extra time makes all the difference. When you’re saving, a weekend filled with activity can be intimidating as it puts that all-important account balance at risk. But there’s no reason it has to be!

Host your own Masterchef competition with friends

A little friendly competition (and tasty food) is a sure-fire way to capitalise on the long weekend good vibes. All you need is an interesting selection of ingredients and your closest friends and you’ve got yourself a mystery box challenge of your own making. While official contestants tend to create more challenging delicacies, your grudge match can be made up of easy alternatives. If your mates are particularly “culinarily” challenged, spend a few dollars on pizza bases, mini pavlovas or undecorated sponge cakes, and some tasty toppings. Even better; ask your friends to each bring a topping to save some extra pennies. Losers do the washing up!

Wander the avenues of a fruit orchard

Hop in the car for a drive to your closest fruit-picking farm. Soak up the Vitamin D, get out of the city and bring home some literal fruits of your labour. Pack a picnic, enjoy the atmosphere, and make your way around the farm, taking your pick of the fresh, juicy fruits on offer. This is one activity that is great for all ages. The best part? You’ll be spending time with your loved ones without spending your savings.

Rock out at karaoke night

An excuse to work out their impeccable vocal range; your friends will be at the door in no time. Put out some easy appetisers, dust off your greatest hits CDs, and belt out all the old classics. Karaoke is a zero cost, easy way to enjoy your time off. If you’re a dedicated karaoke lover, you could even spend a little on a cordless microphone. Though, be warned: some neighbours might rather that the singing is left to the professionals!

Pick a spot on the map and drive

When you have an extra day or two for some me-time, there’s nothing better than getting out on the great open road and enjoying some sneaky time away. No matter the weather, a quiet trip is always a good idea even if it’s just for the day. Pick a spot a few hours away and take in the country air, or soak up the sun along the coast. Take your friends along and split the petrol cost for an even more budget-friendly trip.

Host a game night

Board games, snacks, company – a pretty great trio that has long weekend written all over it. Board games – what home doesn’t have a few stashed in the cupboard? No luck? Have your friends bring them, or even better, call your mum. Snacks – head down to the supermarket and hit the confectionary aisle, and don’t forget to ask your friends to bring their favourites.

Hike the national parks or coastal walks near you

It’s the long weekend, why not leave your wallet at home and get some exercise with some friends? Embracing the great outdoors will do you a world of good and will leave your bank account untouched. Take in the ocean breeze, find some peace in your nearest national park, or even keep it local and make your way around the neighbourhood. You’ll start back at work more refreshed than ever, sans spender’s guilt.
