Just north of Harbourside Place is the Loxahatchee River Environmental Center in Burt Reynolds Park, it’s a great place to spend some time with your kids and learn about local marine ecosystems.
About the Center
The Loxahatchee River Environmental Center opened in Jupiter on August 23, 2008. The center’s beautiful aquariums trace the Loxahatchee River from its headwaters in Palm Beach County, through the cypress dominated floodplain in the Wild & Scenic segment, past the sand bar, and finally out to the coral reefs through Jupiter Inlet.
The River Center’s mission statement says, “We are dedicated to preserving the Loxahatchee River and its natural habitats, by designing innovative wastewater solutions, furthering river research efforts and fostering environmental stewardship.”
Today the River Center features over 6,000 gallons of fresh and saltwater aquariums, interactive exhibits, and a touch tank for the young and young at heart. The exhibits characterize the Loxahatchee River system stemming from a “freshwater cypress swamp to the seagrass-dominated estuary to marine ecosystems”.
The River Center’s purpose is to offer interested residents and guests the opportunity to learn about the “wild and scenic” Loxahatchee River. It highlights characteristics of the Loxahatchee River with live aquatic tanks which helps educate the public about the importance of keeping the River free of contaminants.
The River Center hopes to convey the significance of maintaining the vitality and health and continuing efforts to maintain the vitality of the River. Many families live enjoyable, waterfront living on the Loxahatchee River. It is is important to teach future generations about the River. The River Center hopes kids’ programs including fish feeding, songs, story hours, art classes, touch tanks and educational tours will enable that to happen. The center also has opportunities for adults to attend lectures by local authorities on the quality of the water, aquatic life, environmental trends, etc.
