The FSCS (Financial Services Compensation Scheme) has declared 16 firms, including several offering mortgage advice, in default in the period 1 October to 30 November.

As the firms have gone out of business, and the FSCS believes they are unable to meet claims themselves, customers who are owed money by them may be able to secure compensation through the scheme.

The FSCS offers claims support to customers with money held in banks, building societies and credit unions as well on insurance, investments, mortgage advice and arranging, and debt management.

FSCS chief executive Caroline Rainbird says:  “We know it’s stressful when a financial firm stops trading but owes you money. That’s why we have specially trained claims handlers who are here to assist you through every step of the process, and we’ll keep you up to date with our progress. In the 2020/21 financial year we helped more than 52,000 customers get back on track – by either paying them compensation or enabling them to transfer to a new provider for their investment or insurance policy.”
