Complaints about mortgages dipped from 8.7 per 1,000 balances outstanding to 8.4 from the first half to the second half of 2019, the latest data from the FCA has shown.

The figures reveal that 52 per cent of complaints about home loans were upheld in favour of the consumer, down from 53 per cent in the first half of last year and 56 per cent in 2018.

Barclays was the most complained about active lender in the second half of last year with almost 80 complaints per 1,000 mortgage accounts on its books.

Only inactive lender Northern Rock Asset Management received higher levels of disgruntled borrowers with 113 complaints per 1,000 customers.

Beneath Barclays in the complaints league table was Blemain Finance, now operating under the Together brand, with 49 complaints for every 1,000 accounts.

This was followed by inactive lender Bradford & Bingley with 46 complaints per 1,000 accounts.

The mortgage book, like NRAM, is now owned and managed by UK Asset Resolution.

Shariah compliant home finance provider Al Rayan Bank was next with 39 complaints per 1,000 customers.

Among mortgage advice firms L&C had the most complaints with 20 cases per 1,000 sales followed by Connells with 18 per 1,000, however many smaller brokers would not have high enough sales figures to feature in the data tables.
