At a special meeting Thursday night at City Hall, the City Council unanimously approved a series of upgrades to Downtown Palm Beach Gardens, which is the area’s main 49-acre lifestyle and entertainment complex.

Proposed changes include new murals, landscaping, sculptural seating and swings; a realignment of the entry drive aisle from Alternate A1A; new signage; and the relocation of the complex’s popular carousel from Center Court to the waterfront.

In its place, a new interactive water feature will be installed.

Construction is expected to begin next month on upgrades to the 49-acre lifestyle and entertainment complex, which would include updated architecture and a new spot for the carousel.

The changes are part of what is expected to be a major transformation of the 14-year-old development.

ShopCore also plans to build a multi-family residential building and mixed-use tower consisting of retail, restaurant, office, and hotel space at the site.

According to the Palm Beach Post, those plans are under review by City staff, and will be presented to the City Council at a later date.

Already underway is construction on the 117,000-square foot Life Time Athletic fitness center on the southwest corner of Gardens Parkway and Lake Victoria Gardens Avenue.

The three-story, resort-style health club will feature amenities like weights, basketball and exercise classes; salon and spa services including hair, nails and massages; wellness services such as yoga, nutrition and personal trainers; a children’s space; a sauna and whirlpool; and a ‘resort-style’ roof deck with pools, cabana and bistro.

A 426-space parking garage will be built west of the facility.
