Do I Qualify for Home Emergency Repairs Assistance?

Do you need emergency repairs on your home that you can’t afford? If so, it may be time to find out if you’re eligible for an emergency repair program offered by the Tennessee Housing Development Agency.

What Is the THDA Emergency Repair Program?

The Emergency Repair Program makes it possible for eligible elderly or disabled homeowners to fix their homes. Eight development districts and one human resource agency administer the program and screen applicants. While full renovations exceed the scope of the program, elderly or disabled homeowners can ask for help with the following types of emergency repairs:

  • Roofs
  • Electrical and plumbing/septic systems
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Repairs to floors or walls and insulation
  • Window and door replacement
  • Bathroom and entry modifications for physically disabled homeowners

What’s Not Included?

There are some restrictions to the work covered by the program, including appliances such as refrigerators, washers and dryers. Additionally, the Emergency Repair Program won’t pay for landscaping to beautify your property, or driveway repairs unless it poses a safety issue.

Who Can Apply?

If this sounds like something you can benefit from, contact your local ERP agency to apply. These agencies process the applications, as the THDA doesn’t accept applications directly. The local ERP agencies determine whether candidates who meet the criteria will receive funding and assistance.

Applicants must be at least 60 years old or disabled and live in the property they want repaired. Residents who have lived in their home one year or more and have majority ownership can apply through their local ERP agency. Homeowners who are up to date on their property taxes may receive an award from the program.

Do You Need Additional Assistance With Your Home?

Other programs offered by THDA to help Tennessee homeowners include the following:

  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
  • Home Modifications and Ramps
  • Foreclosure Prevention
  • Tennessee Repair Loan
  • Weatherization Assistance
