How climate change is changing Dane County real estate

As we approach another Earth Day, we can’t help but acknowledge how climate change is impacting our local real estate market. In the last few months alone, we’ve heard from families in Arizona, California, and Utah who are choosing to move to Madison due to the changing environmental conditions out west. Collectively our clients have mentioned wildfires, excessive smoke, excessive heat, and a diminishing water supply as the reasons for their move.

It’s here. And if we allow climate change to continue unabated, then climate-related migration could create population and environmental pressures in Dane County in ways that we never imagined.

Which begs some important questions:

  • How will we as individuals and as a community limit our impact on climate? Will we be willing to inconvenience ourselves in order to preserve and protect our planet?

  • To what extent will our community planning, new construction, and housing developments support environmental sustainability?

  • How will we ensure our lakes, rivers and water supply are free of runoff and toxic chemicals?

  • To what extent will we commit to conservation and choose to protect our natural spaces?

  • As a society, will we be willing to learn about climate change and elect public officials who prioritize the preservation of the planet?

How we choose to answer these questions will have a profound impact during our lifetime and for generations to come. Stay tuned for more conversation.
