Home movers pausing plans to wait for Budget: Rightmove Mortgage Finance Gazette

Nearly one in five potential home movers have pressed pause on their plans while they await the outcome of the Budget.

The survey of 10,000 potential movers by Rightmove found that 17% were putting plans on hold due to uncertainty about changes to property taxes in next week’s announcement.

The majority (61%) of potential movers were aware of rumours about changes to property taxes in the Budget, with nearly 8 in 10 (79%) of this group expressing concerns.

Those aged 55 and over, and those living in the South East and South West were most likely to be worried about property tax changes, which may be down to the fact they are living in higher value homes.

Rightmove property expert Colleen Babcock says: “Our latest House Price Index showed how market activity is being affected by the various property tax rumours being discussed ahead of the Budget. 

“Now, we’ve heard directly from home-movers about how it’s denting their confidence, with some preferring to wait until after the Budget to see how any policy announcements affect their plans.  

“While most movers are carrying on as normal, it demonstrates how unhelpful the uncertainty over potentially costly changes can be. 

“I think most are now fed up with the rumours and would like to see the final contents of the Budget and assess how they’re impacted.”
