My alarm goes off at…

…whatever time my 18-month-old little girl decides to wake me up! Sadly, it’s not usually a time for which I would choose to set an alarm.

I wanted to work in the mortgage industry because…

…I fell into the industry totally by accident after completing my degree.

I began working in a quality control department of a start-up lender, not knowing much about the industry at all. However, working there from such an early stage of the company’s evolution allowed me to see all that went into becoming a lender.

You’re very much aware that you’re dealing with real people — that their lives can be altered for the better

It also gave me experience of working with intermediaries. I liked what I saw and wanted to become a bigger part of it. The rest is history…

Something that surprised me about my job is…

…how much you want to help the customers.

This is especially true when you look at their cases. You can see how much the application will change their circumstances and really put them in a better financial position.

A perk of the job is the relationships I’ve built with brokers over the years

You’re very much aware that you’re dealing with real people, that their lives can be altered for the better, and the part you can play in that. It’s the basis for a lot of my job satisfaction.

A misconception about my role is…

…that you get to just chat and socialise the whole time — if only! If you’re doing the job correctly, it’s anything but that.

My typical day entails…

…a morning huddle with the team to see how the day ahead looks and what needs to be achieved.

Generally, I’m busy supporting the brokers with referrals, queries via our online portal, and completions.

I’ll also be assisting the team in looking for new business opportunities.

A perk of the job is…

…the relationships I’ve built with brokers over the years.

I have made some brilliant working relationships, which allowed us to work together to get the job done, but also made some great friends along the way.

That’s certainly not the case with a lot of jobs.

My favourite work memory is…

…getting to 21 March 2016 and seeing the results of all the hard work that had gone on over the past days, months and years, with the Mortgage Credit Directive rules being put into place.

Another memory is standing next to winning horse owner David Johnson at Cheltenham races, watching his horses run. That’s a treasured memory.

To unwind after work, I…

…watch any kind of reality TV (I confess that the most recent programme to grab my attention has been Celebs Go Dating!) I generally like the programmes where you can totally switch off and not have to think.

Of course, looking after my daughter takes my mind off work as well.

When I get the chance, I spend time with friends or family. With the end of Covid restrictions, I’ll hopefully be doing a lot more of that over the coming weeks and months.
