FOS records 10% rise in new complaints | Mortgage Strategy

The Financial Ombudsman (FOS) recorded a 10% rise in received complaints between July and September.

Within this period the FOS received 38,470 new complaints compared to 35,029 between April and June.

For residential mortgages, there were 1,299 complaints. A total of 415 of these referred for a decision from the ombudsman, of which 28% were upheld.

Second charge mortgages attracted 173 complaints, 35 were punted to the ombudsman and 38% of these were upheld.

Complaints for Help to Buy mortgages numbered 39, of which 13 went to the ombudsman and 80% of which were upheld, and finally, within this classification, bridging loans complaints numbered fewer than 10.

Meanwhile, in equity release, lifetime mortgages garnered 73 complaints, 11 going to the ombudsman, and 9% being upheld.

Both home reversion plans and shared appreciation mortgages saw fewer than 10 complaints lodged apiece.

Overall, the FOS says that it upheld 34% of complaints across the services and products it covers.
