A Day in the Life of: Raphael Benggio, head of regulated underwriting, MT Finance | Mortgage Strategy

My alarm goes off at…

…6.05am and I am in the gym for 7.00am. I like to get a good hour of training done in the morning. I find it is the best way to start my day.

I’m at my desk for 8.15am, energised and ready to tackle anything the day throws at me.

I wanted to work in the mortgage industry because…

…I’ve always had a very keen interest in both property and finance, so it definitely felt like the right choice.

Something that surprised me about my job is…

…the culture here at MT Finance. Prior to joining, I was aware that MT Finance had a reputation in the industry for having a ‘Can do’ attitude, providing brilliant customer service and being commercial in its approach to lending. What surprised me was that these values were truly engrained in the culture at MT Finance.

The buzz and the atmosphere of the office are things we have all missed during lockdown. It is great to be back

It also surprised me that a lot of people didn’t fully realise how simple regulated bridging finance is. Even though it’s a regulated transaction, it is still a fast, flexible and dynamic product.

A misconception about my role is…

…that an underwriter is working against the client and will try to find a way not to do a loan.

We have to ensure the quality of a loan and make a decision as to whether or not it is viable to the client and to the business.

Sometimes that decision isn’t an easy one but we will always look to lend where possible.

My typical day entails…

…checking Outlook as soon as I get to my desk. I am not going to lie — I am slightly OCD when it comes to checking my emails and ensuring I am on top of them.

At some point in the morning I will have a catch-up with my team and review the pipeline with the underwriters. We do this to ensure that as a team we are on top of every case and those being prepared for completion that day are prioritised.

Even though it’s a regulated transaction, it is still a fast, flexible and dynamic product

The buzz and atmosphere of the office are things we have all missed during lockdown. It is great to be back, particularly as the fast-paced nature of short-term property finance — apologies if this sounds like a cliché but it is true — means no two days are ever the same.

A perk of the job is…

…the daily interaction I have with so many brilliant individuals — from experienced and motivated colleagues who share the same goals and vision for our department and industry, to the experienced third-party property professionals and introducers with whom I liaise daily.

My favourite work memory is…

…aside from taking part in our own version of Band Aid for Christmas and dressing up as Bono… it would have to be the steady and consistent progress the regulated team has made in 2021.

We have built a solid foundation that will enable us to continue our growth plans.

To unwind after work, I…

…like to meet up with friends, go to a nice restaurant with my wife, or simply sit and relax with a good whisky.
