Preparing Your Home (and Your Finances) for Winter

It’s that time of year again, where we crank up the heater, fill up the hot water bottles, and pull out our warmest blankets. As the cold winter weather sets in, keeping our homes warm and dry is a priority. A warm home is not only more comfortable, but also more energy efficient. Even though we’re already in the midst of winter, here are three steps you can take to improve your home and your comfort this winter.

1. Seal drafty areas

Much of a home’s heat is lost through doors, floors, and window frames, making it essential to seal these areas to prevent heat loss.

  • Inspect your windows for any warped frames or broken glass and replace them as necessary.
  • Cover drafty windows with thermal-backed curtains or blinds to add an extra layer of insulation.
  • Use draft excluders for doors to block any gaps where cold air might seep in.
  • Place rugs over wood or tile floors to add warmth and prevents the cold from creeping in.

2. Choose the right heater

The right heater can make big a difference to the comfort of your home during winter. Choose a heater based on the size and layout of your rooms, as well as the level of insulation.

  • Heat pumps: Are highly efficient and effective for heating large areas and can double as air conditioners in the summer.
  • Electric heaters: Portable and easy to use but can be expensive to run if used extensively.
  • Gas heaters: Efficient and powerful, suitable for larger spaces, but require proper ventilation.
  • Wood burners: Provide a cozy atmosphere and are cost-effective if you have a cheap supply of wood, but they need regular maintenance and a proper chimney.

Remember to check the energy efficiency rating of any heater you’re considering, to avoid wasting energy and money on an inefficient heating source for your space.

3. Improve the ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential for keeping your home warm, dry, and healthy during the winter months. To prevent condensation and mould growth which can negatively affect both your home and your health, it’s important to ensure good airflow.

  • Install extractor fans in kitchen, laundry and bathrooms to remove excess moisture and humidity.
  • Open windows and doors for at least 15 minutes each day to allow fresh air to circulate through your home.
  • Avoid hanging wet washing inside as that can significantly increase indoor moisture levels that lead to dampness and mould problems.
  • Consider installing a Heat Recovery Ventilation System (HRV) which continuously brings fresh air into your home while extracting stale air, helping to maintain a healthy indoor environment without losing heat.
