Three key regions for families

CoreLogic research commissioned by Aussie reveals three areas top the wish list for home-buying families in Canberra – Tuggeranong, Gungahlin and Belconnen. In each of these locations, at least one in two households are families with kids, so local youngsters have no lack of local play mates.

Parents are likely attracted to the new housing developments in these outer regions, as well as the more affordable housing prices relative to areas closer to the city.

Bonner – the ACT’s most family-friendly suburb

Topping the list of Canberra most family-friendly neighbourhoods is Bonner in the Gungahlin area, where 66.2% of households are shared with children. Families can expect to pay around $648,000 for a house in Bonner though apartments are more affordable with a median price tag of about $462,000.

In fact, the Gungahlin area is making quite a name for itself among families. Home to new suburbs and the ACT’s first light rail corridor, Gungahlin isn’t just flourishing, it’s also driving the Capital’s population growth. As the second-fastest growing region in the country, Gungahlin is currently home to 71,000 people, up from 47,000 people in 2011 – an exceptional rate of growth in such a short space of time.

Macgregor – budget-buying for families

For families aiming to buy on a budget, the Belconnen suburb of Macgregor is the most affordable amongst the top 20 Canberra suburbs favoured by families. The median house value is just under $518,000 and more than 50% of households have youngsters so there’ll be no lack of opportunities to wrap up weekends with a game of backyard cricket.
