Tracking 2026 mortgage industry layoffs

  • Key Insight: Lenders are shutting down brands and exiting origination channels as the high-rate cycle isn't letting up.
  • What's at Stake: Hundreds of mortgage professionals have been slated to be laid off since August.

Mortgage players have laid off hundreds of workers since the second half of this year, in mass firings that could rise as origination activity continues to dwindle. Companies have attributed layoffs and cost cuts beginning in late September to economic headwinds, acquisition activity and technology efficiencies.

"It's hard to predict whether we're in the trough or not," said Chuck Williams, chairman and CEO of Northpointe Bank, following his company's announced sale of its retail and consumer direct operations.

The latest workforce reductions are the largest since the massive wave of layoffs in 2022 and 2023 when lenders, servicers and technology firms responded to soaring rates by slashing their payrolls.

The following are companies who have disclosed staff reductions, some via Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications to state officials.

This list will be updated. If you know of layoffs that are not listed here, contact us.
