It looks like a dream come true, an area with breathtaking ocean or waterway views and authentic small-town friendliness. This utopia exists in Tequesta, Florida. The Village of Tequesta is a boater’s delight!  Tequesta is known for its picturesque and relaxing lifestyle on the water just north of Jupiter.  Across the scenic Jupiter Inlet and alongside the graceful Loxahatchee River is the quaint Village of Tequesta.  This is where people have flocked to quietly raise their families or retire and enjoy life peacefully along the waterways.

You may find the name of the little village interesting.  Tequesta received its namesake from a Native American tribe known as Tequesta. They occupied an area along the southeastern coast of Florida.  They had infrequent contact with Europeans and had largely migrated by the middle of the 18th century. In 1955 a bridge tender was asked by Charles Martyn to describe the area that is now the Village of Tequesta. His reply was, “it’s just a jungle”. Mr. Martyn asked the bridge tender for a boat tour of the area. He was intrigued by the beauty and potential of the area. He bought 86 acres on Jupiter Island. While excavating the site they unearthed an Indian mound filled with artifacts. Martyn’s interest in Indian history led him to research the mound’s contents. It was determined that the mound was of a campsite of Tequesta Indians. Martyn was convinced of this and named an area he was developing west of the Intracoastal after the Tequesta tribe. That development, now known as the Tequesta Country Club, was later incorporated as the Village of Tequesta.

The Village of Tequesta is an outstanding community located along U.S. Highway 1 in northern Palm Beach County.  Its splendor stems from quaint galleries, home grown shops, boutiques, and bistros.  Tequesta is also home to the Tequesta Brewing Company. The award winning T.B.C. is a true brewery; all beer is made on the premises in large stainless-steel tanks complete with a tasting room. If the art of beer making does not intrigue you, how about a good old-fashioned art gallery?  Tequesta Drive has a few galleries and shops to browse through.  The Village of Tequesta offers many programs, including a green market, concerts in the park, skateboard park, etc. for the young and the young at heart.  Visit the official website for details at www.tequesta.org
