A child’s bedroom is a special space. What do you remember about your childhood bedroom?
Regardless of how lavishly decorated it was, it was probably a room you cherished: a place to unwind, play, and grow. Now, imagine if your room was transformed into what you loved most as a kid: A fairytale wonderland! A farm motif with lots of animals! Or, a dinosaur camping trip - why not?! These are exactly the kind of imaginative rooms our Nonprofit Spotlight, Special Spaces Wisconsin, creates for very deserving children in our community.Special Spaces creates amazing, hyper-curated bedrooms for children battling cancer from ages 2 to 19 who are within one year of treatment. Children who are diagnosed with cancer can easily feel isolated, having to put aside activities they once loved, and spend a lot of time at doctors' offices, in treatment, and recovering. However, with an over-the-top decorated space from Special Spaces, their bedroom can remain a place of play, joy, and healing. These rooms make the child feel seen and special during a difficult time.
Fully volunteer-supported, Special Spaces relies on generous individuals and contractors to craft these rooms. They are also professionally designed with the utmost care (think HGTV-level quality!). Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome to pitch in: there are many roles, including building furniture, cleaning, painting, and organizing that help the space come together. What’s more, Special Spaces also refreshes siblings’ rooms, making sure there’s plenty of excitement to go around.
