Popular Family Suburbs in Sydney – the south west proves a hit with kids

Sydney’s south west growth corridor ticks plenty of boxes when it comes to raising a family, with 11 of the city’s top 20 family suburbs located in the region.

According to CoreLogic research commissioned by Aussie, West Hoxton takes the crown for Sydney’s most popular suburb for families. In fact, West Hoxton takes the national prize as Australia’s most preferred suburb for families, with a whopping 79.3% of households having kids. It’s great news for local youngsters, who shouldn’t have any trouble finding a play mate.

With a median house price of $893,273, West Hoxton is also one of Sydney’s more affordable suburbs, especially considering Sydney’s median house value remains over $1 million. For that money you can get a home at West Hoxton on a 500 square metre block, giving the small fry plenty of room to let off steam in the backyard with their friends.

The south west is located around 30 kilometres from the Sydney CBD but that’s clearly not an issue for families. Only one of Sydney’s most popular family suburbs is located less than 30km from the CBD, and that prize is claimed by Barden Ridge in the leafy Sutherland Shire, situated 26.8 kilometres from the CBD.

If your budget can stretch to suburbs within 10km of the Sydney CBD, North Balgowlah is a favourite with families (68.9% of households have children). Or, if you’re happy to opt for an apartment over a house, Haberfield in the inner west comes with a median unit price of $771,583, and just over half (54.6) the local households have children, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to team up with neighbouring families for a picnic in one of the region’s many parks.

Popular Family Suburbs in Regional NSW – former steel cities steal hearts of families

Outside of Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra regions have shrugged off their former reputations as centres of heavy industry to become firm favourites with families, with housing affordability, great local beaches and relatively short distances to Sydney likely to be the key points of appeal.

The Newcastle suburb of Fletcher has the highest proportion of families with children in the Hunter – 67.5%, and a median house price of $632,627.

Down south in the Illawarra, Wilton boasts a very family-friendly status with 63% of households having kids. The median house price is $792,218, and the beaches of Wollongong are just a 30 minute drive away.
