Fasten your walking shoes, come explore a recently designated outstanding natural area in Jupiter.  Join the River Center on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 for a nature walk through the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. Take a walk on the guided trails and immerse yourself in this local natural area. Explore a paved path within this natural area with uneven terrain.

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area was federally designated by Congress in May 2008 to “protect, conserve, and enhance the unique and nationally important historic, natural, cultural, scientific, educational, scenic, and recreational values of the Federal land surrounding the Lighthouse for the benefit of present generations and future generations for the people in the United States.” In this natural area you will find “25 special status species, cultural evidence of 5,000 years of human occupation and a north-side hiking trail to a lagoon overlook through three Florida habitats”. Just as essential, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area was designated as a unit of  National Conservation Lands. It is one of only three Outstanding Natural Areas in the country. These extraordinary lands are found throughout the West, Alaska, and Florida. They are our nation’s newest system of protected public lands alongside our National Parks, National Forests and National Wildlife Refuges.

Interested participants should bring closed shoes, long pants (recommended), a walking stick, comfortable clothing, and plenty of water.
