Research by CoreLogic commissioned by Aussie, confirms that the title of Darwin’s most popular suburb for families with kids goes to Muirhead, located about 13 kilometres north of the Darwin CBD. Here, three out of five households have children, likely attracted to the modern housing and reasonably close proximity to the city centre and airport.

Humpty Doo – room for a pony or just a classful of friends

For families with a generous buying budget, Humpty Doo ranks as the most expensive of Darwin’s top 20 suburbs for families. One in two households have kids, and the typical house value is $686,000 – still well below the price you’d expect to pay in a number of other state capitals.

Part of Humpty Doo’s appeal for families lies in the generous land sizes. The average block of land in Humpty Doo is a whopping 10,000 square metres. So the kids could invite a class-full of friends to play and still have room to move.

Darwin’s most affordable family suburb

Even Darwin’s most affordable suburb on the top 20 for families offers generous land sizes. Taking the prize for the city’s most budget-friendly suburb favoured by families is Moulden, located 14.5 kilometres east of the CBD. The typical house value is just $403,000 and for that money families can expect a block size of almost 900 square metres.

Popular Family Suburbs in Regional NT

Darwin is home to more than one in two Territorians, so populations levels start to thin out once you leave the city behind.

That said, Alice Springs has a thriving population of 29,000 – and growing, and if the outback life appeals to you, the suburb of Araluen has one in two households with children. Expect to pay around $496,000 for a house, and give the kids the experience of growing up in the red centre.
