Things to Do This Weekend in South Florida

There are more signs of life around South Florida this weekend, including the reopening of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, which is welcoming visitors back with free admission through September.

Comedy

The Palm Beach Improv hosts its first performances by big-name national acts this weekend, with a show by Carlos Mencia 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4 ($25, plus fees/taxes and two drinks), and four by Craig Shoemaker 7 p.m. Friday-Sunday and 4 p.m. Saturday ($22+).

Music

We are certainly not there yet, but when there is a weekend that allows us to agree that “normalcy” has returned to life in South Florida, it will include a performance of twangy optimism by the Copper Tones. On Friday, half of the “soulgrass” band — Stefanie Smerkers (vocals, guitar, banjolele) and Dyllan Thieme (vocals, upright bass, mandolin) — will perform at Andy’s Live Fire in downtown Fort Lauderdale from 6 to 9 p.m.

Zoo

After a members-only dry run this week, the Palm Beach Zoo reopens to the public on Friday, with limits on capacity and a one-way path through the property to encourage social distancing. Certain exhibits remain closed, including the carousel, train, observatory, cafe, aviary and butterfly garden. Masks are encouraged. Wear one. Tickets cost $24.95, seniors (60+) $22.95, ages 3-12 $18.95.

Kids

Rapids Water Park in Riviera Beach will reopen for the season on Friday with a fewer guests admitted, new social-distancing and sanitizing rules in place and a recommendation that masks (mandatory for staff) be worn by visitors. Because masks are not permitted in the water or on slides, they may be a rarity in the park among non-staff. The most inexpensive daily admission starts at $22.50 (Monday-Friday, after 4 p.m.). Parking costs $15.
