What prompted you to set up your own mortgage brokerage last year?

Having worked in the intermediary industry for about 25 years, I have seen how the very best mortgage brokers worked and have always thought ‘I would love to do that.’

I always believed it would be when I was too old to race around the UK and when I wanted to attend fewer industry dinners, but last year the time just felt right.

Having worked for a range of lenders, I have deep insight and knowledge on how they work and I keep on top of their product and criteria changes, proving more value to clients than if they were to approach one lender directly.

What are the main differences between working for a lender and being on the broker side of the industry?

There is a lot of satisfaction in being on the broker side. I get to speak to, and understand the situations and financial challenges of, those individuals who want to buy a home.

There are many people who don’t have insight on the ins and outs of getting a mortgage. With a wide variety of lenders offering a range of products, limited editions and changing criteria, it can be daunting for mortgage seekers.

You don’t get to meet these people when working for a lender. You don’t see the extent of the impact your advice and support have made on their lives. But on the broker side you do. I find satisfaction in helping people find a suitable mortgage and, being supported by Mortgage Advice Bureau, I have a comprehensive range to recommend from.

I have worked with lenders such as Accord, Pepper and Santander, where I had the opportunity to meet many brokers with a passion for supporting customers, and I’m pleased to now be one of them.

What has been your biggest career challenge?

Being asked to step up as sales director in 2018 to hold together internal and external teams while still achieving business targets. I love challenges like this and see them as learning opportunities. Now I’m putting those skills into my own business.

If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

A smoother conveyancing process – nothing more to say.

As a woman in the finance industry, do you feel you have been at any disadvantage because of your gender?

Having a quiet voice, I sometimes feel it is not heard, but I keep on until my point is understood.

A person’s gender should never impact a final business decision and, although being a woman in the finance industry can be slightly challenging, I have never considered it one of my biggest challenges. My bag is filled with over 25 years of skill, experience and knowledge.

What is the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?

Taking a leap from the lending industry to being a broker. Despite the similar concept of helping people to get a mortgage, there is a massive difference between primarily working B2B with brokers and partners, and being in B2C.

But it’s been brilliant. I get to speak with lenders and have the satisfaction of being able to tell people I’ve found a mortgage deal that meets their circumstances, or their application has gone through. Even in the current climate I have no regrets and foresee more opportunities.

As a child, what was your dream job?

I love horses and from childhood I’ve always wanted to be a showjumper, only to realise I was better at mortgages!

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Invest in property early and go self-employed sooner. Don’t stress about things you can’t influence, and have confidence in yourself.

Do you have any secret talents?

I can ride horses western style and drive a 7.5-tonne lorry – but not at the same time.

Who is your all-time hero, and why?

Rob Barnard! His presence on stage was always something I envied, plus the way he made people laugh. Oh, and he was a fantastic boss – genuine, motivating and inspiring.
