With the summer weather fast approaching, getting out on the water is one of South Florida’s most popular outdoor activities. Since 2010, the State of Florida has required anyone born after January 1st, 1988, to obtain their Boater Safety Identification Card by taking an approved state course if they wish to get behind the wheel of a boat.

Florida does not have a “boating license” but a Boating Safety Education Identification Card. The card is proof of a successful completion of the course and a pass on the exam.  The Identification Card is valid for life and no renewal fees or continuing education course is required once the course is completed and the exam is passed. However, you are asked to continue to review and follow the current boating rules and regulations.

The Boating Safety Courses range in price. Some classes are free, and the classes range from $15 dollars to $50 dollars. Once the course is completed you will be asked to take a short exam of everything you have learned during the course.

Once you pass the exam, you will be issued a Temporary Boating Certificate. The Temporary Boating Certificate can be used immediately, and your Boater Safety Education Identification Card will be mailed to you.
