Financial adviser Old Mill sets up stamp duty unit

The team will be lead by senior tax manager Laura Wylie, supported by tax specialists Mark Trevethan and Zoe Chandler.

The firm says this new unit will be able to advise clients on available reliefs and calculate related liabilities.

The adviser says the move to set up a specialist stamp duty land tax division “comes in response to the increased number of queries around mixed-use acquisitions, multiple dwellings relief — where the total stamp duty land tax payable can be significantly lower — and partnerships, which can be a really complex area of legislation”.

Previously, the firm says this function was outsourced to a third party, but the new team will now handle all queries.

Wylie says: “Stamp duty land tax is an area of tax that I have found particularly interesting for some time now as it is so far-reaching so it made sense to bring this in-house so that we can advise clients on available reliefs and calculate stamp duty land tax liabilities.

“We will look to work closely with solicitors, who will ultimately prepare the stamp duty land tax return.

“We are seeing several of these queries coming up each month, so I am really pleased that we are now able to retain that business in house, as it ties in nicely with our existing offering.”
