Good news coming out of South Florida as the famous Breakers Resort announced this past Friday they plan to reopen their doors on May 22.

“In response to COVID-19 and in compliance with all government recommendations and orders, The Breakers and all related businesses will remain temporarily closed until our intended reopening at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 22,” the hotel said in a statement issued at 5 p.m. Friday.

“The health and safety of our guests and team members remain The Breakers’ highest priority,” the statement said.

The hotel, Palm Beach’s grand dame of resorts, announced March 17 that it would close the following day for at least three weeks in response to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic. The resort also closed its related businesses and restaurants.

The hotel’s announcement came more than a week before Palm Beach County on March 26 banned hotels from accepting new reservations from the public.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Sara Flight, director of communications, told the Daily News on Saturday that the resort “intends and hopes to reopen, but that could change.” Guidelines from the governor and county will be followed, she said.

People can make reservations via email or on the Breakers’ website for May 22 and beyond, Flight said.

The hotel’s golf course and tennis courts reopened Friday for members after the county on Monday announced that some recreational facilities would be allowed to reopen.

Note also that the hotel managed to keep and continue paying all 1,700 of its full-time employees throughout this unprecedented situation—an impressive and respectable feat.
