UK residential property transactions fell by 1% in September compared with the previous month, according to the latest figures from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The department said affordability pressures and economic uncertainty continuing to weigh on the housing market.
The HMRC figures show that there were 94,800 residential transactions on a seasonally-adjusted basis during September, 4% lower than the same month last year.
On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, transactions were down 5% year on year but increased by 1% compared with August 2026.
Industry experts have warned that further weakness could lie ahead, with declining mortgage approvals, elevated borrowing costs and stretched affordability likely to affect completed sales in the coming months.
