Debbie Scanish is the Director of Business Operations with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Cypress in Lexington Kentucky. Read on for some great insights into which P.A.I.G.E. value she identifies with the most, and why.

1.    Which of our BHGRE P.A.I.G.E. (Passion, Authenticity, Inclusion, Growth, Excellence) core values do you identify with most, and why?

Growth.  I love to learn – new things, old things, how to do things differently.  If I’m not learning, I’m not growing.

2.    What are your favorite qualities in a customer?

Sense of humor.  I have a dry sense of humor that some people don’t get.  I appreciate being to laugh with people, especially when we’re in a stressful situation.  If you can laugh at whatever is going on, you’ll make it through.

3.    What is the one characteristic that’s helped you the most in your career?

See question #1.  I want to be good at what I do, so I’m constantly looking for new or better ways to do my job.  It’s important to take risks and make mistakes.  Learn from those mistakes – we’re all human.  Don’t settle for the status quo.

4.    What was the last book you read?

I am almost finished with “Extreme Ownership.”  Anyone in a leadership position should read this book.  The authors use their experiences leading teams in the military to teach business leadership.

5.    If you were not in real estate, what would you be doing?

I would go back to Human Resources.  I enjoy helping businesses recruit, retain, and train people.

6.    What was the last song you heard that you couldn’t stop humming?

Lauren Daigle – “You Say”

7.    Who is your real-life hero?

My daughter.  She is a talented artist, a very intelligent and beautiful girl who doesn’t let anything get in her way of doing what she wants to do.  She will go far in her career and I can’t wait to watch it!

8.    What is your favorite motto?

Not a motto, but a Bible verse:

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

9.    If you could sell a home in any market in the world, where would it be?

I am not a real estate agent, so selling isn’t an option.  However, I love living in the Lexington, KY, area.  If I had to move, I would choose to move to somewhere in NC, probably.

10.  What advice would you give your younger self starting out in real estate?

Ask questions.  My younger self was too proud to ask anyone anything for fear of looking stupid.  I’m too old to worry about that and ask tons of questions (see question #1 again).  People don’t think you’re stupid when you ask questions; they want to help.  I wish I knew that 30 years ago!
