Well this is great news! The teeny-tiny, uncomfortable furniture of the past couple of years is sitting 2018 out. This year, you’ll see sofas and chairs you just want to sink into (and can’t get out of easily), cosy textures and layered looks. The move away from stark spaces is a welcome shift for those of us who don’t mind a bit of oversized comfort and like a home that shares a bit about the residents. Think: family photos, paintings by the kids, and an ultra-comfy couch that welcomes you at the end of the day.

Key buy to master the look: A mix of cushions.

Out: The Fiddle-leaf fig indoor plant

This has been the ‘it’ indoor plant spotted all through interior magazines and renovation shows in 2017. The indoor plant trend definitely has roots, but there’s a new hero plant on the scene. The Monstera deliciosa still has that lush green look of a Fiddle-leaf fig, but with more of a sculptural shape. Plus, because it’s a tropical species, it’s the type of plant that will love the humidity of the bathroom and really thrive. Why not bring a fresh look to your bathroom this year?

Key buy to master the look: A statement pot for your plant.

In: Integrated technology

We’ve seen a period of rapid growth in the tech space, and the functionality of integrated home technologies is astounding. You can now find smart fridges that will let you know what you’re running low on, voice-activated light, heating/cooling and music controls and home shopping devices that scour the internet for the best deal and order it for you. If you’re not ready to step into the future, there are a number of more entry-level additions that will streamline your life without replacing everything in your home with a whizz-bang alternative.

Key buy: Try Google Home, Alexa or HomePod to start your home’s shift to the future. You’ll love them for what they can do for your home entertainment system thanks to voice-activated control.

Out: Metallic

Let’s not rule out the metallic look completely – who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle? But rather than the glitzy sheen of metallic, such as the super-saturated copper tone that has popped up on pendant lights, baskets, vessels and clocks in 2017, the trend will see a more muted approach to shine. A less-lustrous brass tone is where the metallic trend is heading this year.

Key buy to master the look: Brass cutlery set.

Even if interior design trends aren’t for you, there’s a lot to be said for loving where you live. The key to mastering interior style is choosing things you love – this creates a home that’s uniquely yours.
