Maui has once again captured the world’s attention — this time as one of National Geographic’s “Best of the World 2026” destinations. Each year, National Geographic highlights 25 locations that define how and where travelers will explore in the coming year, and Maui proudly earned its place among some of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

Editors and explorers at National Geographic selected Maui for its remarkable diversity — from its red, white, and black sand beaches to the breathtaking landscapes shaped by ancient volcanoes and ocean breezes. The publication described Maui as “a beautiful example of the diversity of our world that travelers should visit in a sustainable way so it can be enjoyed for decades to come.”

The recognition underscores Maui’s role as both a world-class travel destination and a model for responsible tourism — where visitors can connect deeply with nature, culture, and community while respecting the island’s delicate ecosystems.

The full Best of the World 2026 list includes destinations that span the globe — from Italy’s Dolomites and Rwanda’s Akagera National Park to Banff, Canada and Oaxaca, Mexico. Alongside Maui, four U.S. locations were recognized this year for their blend of beauty, culture, and sustainability.

According to National Geographic Editor-in-Chief Nathan Lump, the annual list aims to “inspire and transform” travelers by spotlighting places that evoke joy, discovery, and a sense of connection. He emphasized that this year’s selections feature both well-known and unexpected destinations, from Japan’s snow-covered Zao Mountains to the historic city of Khiva, Uzbekistan.

From sunrise above the island’s summit to the scenic curves of Hāna Highway, Maui offers experiences that stir the soul. Whether you’re drawn to beaches, farms, or cultural traditions, now is the time to reconnect with the island’s beauty and its people.
