The City of Okeechobee is located just north of Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida, and the second largest natural freshwater lake in the United States. A quiet community with lots of wildlife and nature to explore, Okeechobee is also quickly becoming the capital of one of the fastest growing sports in America – clay shooting.

Families are participating in the sport because it provides wholesome family fun, and it gives you hours of excitement in the fresh air. Tournaments draw competitors to Okeechobee from all over the world, and recently, many avid shooters have been moving to South Florida so they can enjoy this outdoor sport year-round in the warm sunshine.

Described as “Golf with a Shotgun,” more than 3 million people of all ages are participating in courses designed to simulate field shooting, and competitors are challenged to a wide variety of targets that duplicate the escape tactics of wild game. Clays “flush” like quail, hop like rabbits, and fly across the sky as fast as the swiftest waterfowl.

Charities have even been getting in on the fun, with organizations like Place of Hope children’s charity, breast cancer awareness nonprofit Knotty Girl, Ronald McDonald House, and the Mark Garwood SHARE Foundation planning clay tournaments to fundraise, among others.

Families are embracing clay shooting in our area because it is a safe, fun, and exciting way to bond with each other in Florida’s natural environment.
