The Federal Housing Finance Agency announced Monday that senior advisor Clinton Jones will be promoted to general counsel for the agency, replacing Alfred Pollard, who will retire at the end of March.

Jones has been with the agency in his current role since 2009. Previous to that, he held legal advisory roles with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services, including serving as senior counsel for the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee. Jones was also previously a vice president at Fannie Mae and has served as the attorney advisor for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Jones also served on presidential mortgage fraud task forces and was a member of the Administrative Conference of the United States, according to the FHFA.

“Clinton’s long-standing career in public service, in-depth legal expertise in housing policy, and executive leadership skills will help bolster FHFA’s work as a world-class prudential regulator,” FHFA director Mark Calabria said in an announcement about the appointment.

The appointment comes as the Biden administration ramps up its efforts to address housing finance reform as well as the previous administration’s moves to exit the government-sponsored enterprises from conservatorship.

Outgoing general counsel Alfred Pollard has served the agency in that capacity since its founding in 2008. He had previously served as general counsel to the FHFA’s predecessor, the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight.

“Alfred has served admirably as General Counsel to every FHFA Director. I am grateful for his wise counsel, hard work, and dedication to the Agency,” Calabria said.
