South Florida needs to stay informed. We need to get the latest most valid information on guidelines for prevention by the media and then plan accordingly. Addressing the unknown is very difficult. In the face of an epidemic, we are uncertain how to respond. Let’s all take a deep breath and long exhale.

Threatened by contagion, alarmed by unknown risks, we move into survival mode. We need to relax.  We ruminate. We have the urge to connect and the fear of contamination. We become inundated with mass media warnings and alarming information. Fear can pull us into anger and uncertainty. It exhausts us.

Shutting off the news and taking a walk or make a puzzle help reduce stress. Daily routines like exercise of any type, biking, running, playing ball, walking your dog, playing outside with children are all invaluable in lowering stress.  Connection around fun activities a four-way app crossword puzzle, watching a sitcom, or listen to your favorite music.  These activities reduce the hyperarousal associated with the body’s fight/flight stress reactions.  Sleeping is critical in regulating the anxiety and worry that disrupt body’s rhythms.
