Senate Republicans urge Pulte to take more actions

New Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte's mailbox is getting full, with the Republican Senate majority sending its own letter.

Pulte has started out as an activist agency head, cancelling or terminating several existing programs and policies. This includes ending the special purpose credit program offerings at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and rolling back unfair deceptive acts and practices enforcement.

The letter, signed by Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott, R.-S.C. follows two separate letters from Senate Democrats addressed to Pulte. On the mortgage industry side, the Community Home Lenders of America also sent Pulte a list of its expectations on March 18.

Scott urges Pulte to return FHFA to what he called its "core mission while aggressively and prudently rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse" at the agency and the entities it regulates. This is not just Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but the Federal Home Loan Banks also fall under FHFA's purview.

"I am encouraged by your dedication to that cause in your short time as Director," Scott wrote. "According to reports, you discovered that the FHLBank of San Francisco agreed to make a multimillion-dollar payment to a former Biden political appointee who had worked there only for a few months as part of a separation agreement," apparently referring to former Ginnie Mae President Alanna McCargo. McCargo became president of the bank in May 2024 and resigned at the end of January.

Without specifying a date for a response, Scott asked Pulte to "provide an update on the results of your efforts to identify waste, fraud, and abuse and to refocus the entities within your purview. The Committee stands ready to work with you on any statutory obstacles that may be hindering a flourishing housing finance system."

The other senators listed as signatories to the letter are: Mike Crapo, R-Idaho; Mike Rounds, R-S.D.; Thom Tillis, R-N.C.; John Kennedy, R-La.; Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn.; Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo.; Katie Britt, R-Ala.; Pete Ricketts, R-Neb.; Jim Banks, R-Ind.; Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.; Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio; and Dave McCormick, R-Pa.
