Why we love recommending other professionals

We recently discussed as a team why we enthusiastically refer to certain professionals, and a few clear themes emerged from our conversation.

Why we recommend other professionals -- 4 themes

First and foremost, we refer to other professionals because they have a track record of being reliable and competent. They've proven over time that they are very good at what they do, and that they will do right by each person we send their way.

Another common theme was honesty. We recommend certain professionals or companies because we know they will always be truthful, even when they have nothing to gain by offering their honest advice. Sometimes their advice is, "I'm not the best professional to serve you, but I know just the right person who can help."

Yet another theme was presence and time. Some professionals truly value open, two-way communication. They're always willing to talk on the phone or meet in-person in order to best address each client's questions and concerns.

Underlying all of these themes was the theme of caring. Some professionals see each client as an individual with their own unique needs, concerns, and sometimes even fears. They do their best to address each client's underlying concerns and fears, knowing that they will need to get to know each client better in order to bring their concerns and fears to the surface.

The takeaway

At the end of our meeting, we all agreed that being reliable and competent, being honest, sharing our presence and time, and caring for the needs of each individual client are essential elements of our own jobs.

Of course, along with these traits, we also need to bring our own initiative. We need to be willing to dedicate ourselves to our careers and do the work that's required of us, all while leaning into our unique talents and interests.
