Palm Beach Gardens is a city in northern Palm Beach County that is home to roughly 56,300 residents and is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area. The city has a total area of 55,000 square miles and roughly two tenths of a mile features water.
Prior to becoming a city in 1969, Palm Beach Gardens was primarily cattle ranches and pine forests with swamp lands to the west. In 1959, the land was purchased by John D. MacArthur and he announced his plan to develop 4,000 acres and build homes for 55,000 people. MacArthur choose the name Palm Beach Gardens after his initial request for Palm Beach City was denied by the Florida Legislature because of the similarity of the nearby town of Palm Beach. The city was incorporated on June 20th, 1959 and it was known as the “paper town” meaning that it only existed on paper. The city was not officially a city until June 20th, 1969.
Today, the city is home to thousands of residents located within many of its luxurious gated communities and tree lined streets. Palm Beach Gardens is home to 12 golf courses and was a previous home to the Professional Golfers Association of America headquarters. Palm Beach Gardens is home to the professional golf tournament, The Honda Classic and it is held at PGA National Resort and Spa every year.
