On Tuesday, a report came out from Eamon Lynch at GolfWeek that the PGA Tour is creating a new program designed at rewarding those players that constantly "move the needle" with an additional bonus payout at the end of the season. The Player Impact Program, as it's being called, is designed to pay out an end-of-the-year bonus to the players finishing in the top 10 based on a variety of requirements. The pool that those 10 golfers will be splitting is $40 million.

The 10 golfers will be determined based on their “Impact Score,” which will be determined based on an algorithm the Tour has created that comprises of 5 categories. The 5 categories are:

  • Popularity on Google search
  • Nielsen Brand Exposure rating, which measures the value a player delivers to sponsors via his total time featured on broadcasts
  • Q-rating, a metric of the familiarity and appeal of a player’s brand
  • MVP rating, a measure of how much engagement a player’s social media and digital channels drive
  • Meltwater mentions, or the frequency with which a player is mentioned across a range of media channels.

Basically, the more popular and more recognizable your name is, the more money you will make as a result of this new program. This new program will likely line the pockets of some of the top golfers in the world including Rory Mcllroy, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, and even Tiger Woods who is still recovering from his car accident in California in February.
