Are you searching for a neighborhood that offers a pedestrian lifestyle, where many of your daily conveniences are close to home? Here are several walkable neighborhoods for your consideration, both within and around the city of Madison.
Williamson Street
On the near east side of town, the Williamson Street corridor (aka "Willy Street") offers an urban lifestyle and beautiful setting on Madison's isthmus. The Tenney-Lapham neighborhood runs along Willy Street to the north, the Marquette neighborhood just to the south.
Here you'll enjoy a wide variety of unique restaurants, coffee shops, and entertainment venues. Plus easy access to the neighborhood grocery store, the bike path, Lake Monona/Lake Mendota, and some of Madison's most iconic parks. Historic Breese Stevens Field, on East Washington Avenue, is home to Madison's professional soccer team, ultimate frisbee team, and outdoor concerts.
Atwood Avenue
Just to the east, the Atwood Avenue corridor offers a similar vibe and feel as Willy Street. In both the Schenk-Atwood and Eastmorland neigborhoods, you'll enjoy many of the same local amenities as Willy Street, along with a short walk to Olbrich Gardens, Obrich Park, and the Barrymore Theatre.
Hilldale Mall
Hill Farms and Sunset Village on the near west side are walkable to Madison's open-air shopping center at Hilldale Mall. In addition to hosting a variety of shops and boutique stores, Hilldale offers a nice selection of restaurants, plus two grocery stores and a Target for your everyday needs. The bus line and the bike path allow for an easy commute to both the University and Downtown Madison.
Park Street
The Greenbush and Bay Creek/Lakeside neighborhoods along the Park Street Corridor offer a more urban setting close to the center of the city. This part of town offers excellent access to the bike path, Lake Monona, the UW Arboretum, several grocery stores, and plenty of authentic restaurants across a wide variety of cuisines.
Monroe Street
The Monroe Street corridor is home to the Dudgeon-Monroe and Vilas neighborhoods. Monroe Street offers a Trader Joe's Grocery store, along with a nice selection of restaurants, coffee shops, and locally-owned shops and boutiques. The local bike path, Vilas Park, and Wingra Park make Monroe Street a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts.
Downtown Middleton
Further to the west, Downtown Middleton, offers another highly-walkable location. Here you'll enjoy a quick walk to the local grocery store, the public library, and an excellent selection of locally-owned coffee shops and restaurants. With the bus line on University Avenue, Downtown Middleton is just a short commute away from Downtown Madison and the UW-Campus.
Middleton Hills
This part of Middleton also has its own grocery store, along with several popular dining options. But perhaps the biggest draw to Middleton Hills is its proximity to the Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The conservancy is a local treasure, with miles and miles of walking trails winding through scenic surroundings.
Downtown Verona
Located further outside Madison, downtown Verona is a bit of sleeper pick. In downtown Verona, you can walk to the local grocery store, the neighborhood coffee shop, the city library, and the local hardware store and bank. Nearby, the Ice Age Trail and Military Ridge State Trail offer plenty of hiking and biking opportunities, too.
